Hitesh Kamboj - Life-saving officer to be commended

A POLICE officer has described how adrenaline kicked in as he saved a man from throwing himself off a bridge into oncoming traffic. PC Hitesh Kamboj is set to receive a commendation for his actions in pulling a man back from the brink of death as he was hanging from railings in Grove Road, South Woodford, United Kingdom ready to jump on to the A406. Mr Kamboj, 23, told the Guardian how he received a 999 call from a member of the public during rush hour in the evening of December 9 last year. He and another officer drove from Ilford, where they are based, to be confronted with the suicidal man in his 30s. Mr Kamboj said: "As we got there we saw the man hanging over the railings and a member of the public holding on to him. "The man who was suicidal had clearly been drinking and wanted to go over the edge, he had had an argument with his partner and had had enough." (Pictured above with Sgt Andy Barnes, left and PCSO Hitesh Kamboj, on right) The team were out and about in Bedford's and Havering Country parks in an ...   As the man was dangling about 60ft in the air there was no time to reason with him and PC Kamboj grabbed hold and tried to pull him back to safety, to save not only the man's life but the lives of motorists on the busy A406 below. Mr Kamboj said: "You come across all sorts of things when you respond to a call. "This was pretty unusual though and the adrenaline kicked in. "The man was shouting for us to let go and he was kicking against the railings. "We thought we had lost him at one point because it was such a struggle and we thought he might go." After a tense battle the man was pulled over to the right side of the railings and Mr Kamboj had to restrain him before he was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital for psychiatric examination. Mr Kamboj said: "At the time you instinctively react and don't think about it but it was quite satisfying afterwards." It will be the second commendation Mr Kamboj has received as two years ago he managed to talk a suicidal man round from jumping in front of a train at Gidea Park. He will receive his commendation at a ceremony at Wanstead Golf Club next Wednesday. Source:
